NHC-catalysed aerobic aldehyde-esterifications with alcohols: no additives or cocatalysts required.

A highly efficient, broad scope, additive-free mild protocol for the oxidative carbene-catalysed esterification of aldehydes (including the related aqueous oxidation to acids) has been developed.

NHC-catalysed benzoin condensation – is it all down to the Breslow intermediate?† †Electronic supplementary information (ESI) available: Characterisation data of products, substrates and catalysts, EPR and NMR spectra and progress curves as well as computational details are found. The Breslow catalytic cycle describing the benzoin condensation promoted by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) as proposed in the late 1950s has since then been tried by generations of physical organic chemists. Emphasis has been laid on proofing the existence of an enaminol like structure (Breslow intermediate) that explains the observed umpolung of an otherwise electrophilic aldehyde. The present ...

Insights into the Competing Mechanisms and Origin of Enantioselectivity for N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Catalyzed Reaction of Aldehyde with Enamide

Hydroacylation reactions and aza-benzoin reactions have attracted considerable attention from experimental chemists. Recently, Wang et al. reported an interesting reaction of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed addition of aldehyde to enamide, in which both hydroacylation and aza-benzoin reactions may be involved. Thus, understanding the competing relationship between them is of great intere...

The effect of the N-mesityl group in NHC-catalyzed reactions.

The majority of N-heterocyclic carbene catalyzed reactions of α-functionalized aldehydes, including annulations, oxidations, and redox reactions, occur more rapidly with N-mesityl substituted NHCs. In many cases, no reaction occurs with NHCs lacking ortho-substituted aromatics. By careful competition studies, catalyst analogue synthesis, mechanistic investigations, and consideration of the elem...

α-Aroyloxyaldehydes: scope and limitations as alternatives to α-haloaldehydes for NHC-catalysed redox transformations.

α-Aroyloxyaldehydes are readily prepared bench stable synthetic intermediates. Their ability to act as α-haloaldehyde surrogates for NHC-promoted redox esterifications and in [4+2] cycloadditions is described.
